「茶道に学ぶもてなしの心」
冬の灯りに心をよせて　

"Learning the Spirit of Hospitality through the Tea Ceremony"under coming to the Winter Lights

同級生が主催する「なんちゃって夜咄茶事」に通訳を兼ねて参加。この機会を通して、茶道の深い魅力に触れることができました。

茶道とは、お茶を通じて心を整える日本独自の文化であり、その核となるのが「和敬清寂（わけいせいじゃく）」という精神です。

「和」はみんな仲良くする心で、相手の話をよく聞くことが大切。
「敬」はお互いを尊敬する心で、ありがとうを伝える場面に現れます。
「清」は心も場所も清らかにすることを意味し、身の回りを整えることが求められます。そして「寂」は静かに落ち着いた心を持つことであり、ゆっくり深呼吸することを実践する時間です。

茶室では、外のにぎやかさから離れ、静寂の中でお湯の音や茶の香り、そして季節の花に気づきます。五感を通じて心が落ち着き、相手を思いやる「おもてなしの心」が形になります。お茶を点てる人は、おいしく召し上がってほしいという思いを込め、いただく人はその気持ちに感謝の意を表します。

このような心の通い合いが、茶道の最大の魅力です。参加した茶事で、茶道の真髄を少しは理解できたようです。

I served as an interpreter at a casual tea ceremony hosted by a schoolmate. Through this opportunity, I was able to experience the profound charm of the tea ceremony.

Tea ceremony is a uniquely Japanese culture that cultivates peace of mind through tea, and at its core is the spirit of “wakeiseijaku” (harmony, respect, purity, tranquility).

“Wa” means getting along with everyone, and it is important to listen carefully to what others have to say.
“Kei” means respecting each other, and is seen in situations where one expresses gratitude.
“Sei” means purifying both the mind and the space, and requires tidying one’s surroundings. And “jaku” means having a quiet, calm mind, and it is time to practice taking slow, deep breaths.

In the tea room, away from the hustle and bustle outside, one can quietly notice the sound of the water flowing, the aroma of tea, and seasonal flowers. The mind is calmed through the five senses, and the “spirit of hospitality”—consideration for others—is embodied. The person preparing the tea expresses their desire for the tea to be enjoyed, and the person receiving it expresses their gratitude for that sentiment.

This kind of heart-to-heart communication is the greatest attraction of the tea ceremony. I think I was able to understand a little bit of the essence of the tea ceremony by participating in the tea ceremony.
